Solin, ancient Salona, is one of the most important historical centres of the Croatian lands — first as the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, and later as one of the key sites of early Christianity on the eastern Adriatic coast. After its destruction in the 7th century, it was in this very area that the foundations of the early medieval Croatian state were shaped. Of particular significance is the coronation of King Zvonimir in 1075 on Gospin Otok (Our Lady's Island), making Solin an enduring symbol of Croatian statehood and continuity.

Also connected to this site is the memory of the Croatian queen Helena, wife of King Mihajlo Krešimir II, who in the 10th century had the Church of St Mary built and was buried in Solin. Her funerary inscription, discovered in the 19th century, is one of the most important written monuments of early medieval Croatia, directly confirming the existence of the Croatian kingdom and its rulers.
